Here is the skinny on SCT. As many of you know, SCT was fined by the EPA for things done by Bully Dog (a mostly diesel specialized company) prior to SCT acquiring them. The issues were diesel tuning issues. The EPA, in part of the settlement, made SCT also train and test any users of their software for emissions compliance. So now when you get their software, and this applies to past users too, including all dealers like ourselves, you have to take a ‘course’ which is a bunch of PowerPoint slides, mostly about diesels. You then take a five...

One of the real problems you might face when you start making more power with your vehicle is you might just "peg" your mass airflow sensor (MAF). What is pegging? When you peg your MAF, you have not reached the airflow limit of the MAF - MAFs, even smaller sized ones, will flow enormous amounts of air. Pegging refers to hitting the electronic capacity of the sensor. MAFs use a tiny heated wire in the airflow stream and a thermistor - which is a resistor that varies resistance according to temperature. The ECU keeps scaling voltage up to keep the...

There are two ways of configuring a mass air meter for a centrifugally supercharged or turbocharged vehicle. Here are the pluses and minuses of each setup. Draw Through A draw through mass air meter (MAF), i.e. ahead of any blower /turbo, is more affected by bends in the pipes near the MAF. You CANNOT use reducers near the MAF. Remember that the Mass air meter relies on laminar airflow to get a good signal. A draw though meter must use a bypass valve for a supercharger – it bleeds off boost and recirculates pressurized air from the blower and keeps...

Common Idle Issues/Fixes (1988-2004) Often it is necessary to reset idle or to try and fix a hunting idle or when a new throttle body is added. The first step is to look for any vacuum leaks on the vehicle. We do not know how many times we have seen cars with vacuum leaks where the owner SWEARS there are not any - this is a weekly occurrence. You can spray around fittings and hoses with carb cleaner or use propane to try and pinpoint leaks, but more often than not, this is a waste of time. A shop with...
